'The Korean title, Hwa-Om-Kyung, is the name of the Buddhist sutra (the Avatamska Sutra) upon which the film is loosely based. Following credits sitting upon a raging fire, the film opens at a crematorium where a child believes he is witnessing the immolation of his father. This child is our main character, Son-je (Oh Tae-kyung -- Happy Ero Christmas, R-Point), who heads out into the world to locate his mother, which he attempts to do through the silent display in public areas of a blanket his mother gave him. Along the way he meets such characters as a local village girl named Iryon, a drunken, meat-eating monk named Boburoon (Lee Ho-jae -- Segimal, Libera Me) who prophesizes that Son-je will live and die on the road, a truck driver who wants to teach him how to meet girls, a blind homeless woman who still professes to love her abusive ex-lover, a prisoner who broke the law by asking for equality, and a doctor of the stars who sees the world's 'quarkiness' as further evidence for Buddhist truths. Many of these people will reemerge at different moments throughout Son-je's journey. This journey, however, takes less than direct directions, as is initiated by a scene of subtle humor where two men point Son-je in completely different directions, resulting in Son-je appearing to be headed astray from his path of prophecy. A 12-year-old Little League pitcher decides to give up his 'best thing' ? baseball ? until the U.S. and the Soviet Union get rid of their nuclear weapons. Chuck (Joshua Zuehlke) stands firm in his protest and is joined by amazing Grace (Alex English), a basketball superstar with the Boston Celtics. Soon other athletes and kids follow pressuring the President of the United States (Gregory Peck) and the leader of the Soviet Union to agree to nuclear disarmament. When it looks as though the upcoming baseball season will have to be cancelled the President of the United States (an impressive Gregory Peck) summons young Chuck to the White House to drum some sense into him.

The single-minded clarity of Chuck's vision unhinges his parents, befuddles the politicians, and draws out the ire of some of his peers. Yet he refuses to compromise or recant. Mike Newell, the director of Amazing Grace and Chuck, has commented: 'I hope this film will leave audiences energized and with a great surge of hope. What if it were possible to re-live one particular day over and over again with the potential of changing one's actions and altering the future? Eleven-year-old Luke Malloy (played by Hayden Panettiere's younger brother Jansen Panettiere) is granted the ultimate 'do-over' when his wish that somehow it could stay today forever comes true and he begins endlessly reliving the last day of summer. Fearful about entering middle school where recess is a thing of the past, they'll be split up from their friends, and a scary punk called Meat (Daniel Samonas) rules the hallways, Luke and his friends A.J. (Jon Kent Ethridge) and Riley (Eli Vargas) are determined to have one last day of fun at the local Labor Day carnival. Things don't go quite as planned and the trio has a frightening encounter with Meat, then Luke's nerves get the better of him at the local skateboard bowl and before his band's performance at the talent show. When Luke is inadvertently hit on the head, he wakes up and it's the last day of summer all over again -- and again, and again... As he repeatedly relives the day, Luke learns a lot about himself and the motivations of others and begins to alter his actions in ways that may potentially change his future. A 'Groundhog Day' for the tween set, 'The Last Day of Summer' is an entertaining movie for ages 7 and older that does a nice job of exploring middle school angst and encouraging self-confidence.
